Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms will be compulsory from 1st October 2022.

Under the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 landlords of both private and social housing must ensure a smoke alarm is fitted on every floor of their property.
New regulations also require all rented properties in England to provide a carbon monoxide alarm in rooms where there is any type of fixed combustion application, such as a gas boiler, however rooms with a gas cooker are excluded
Ministers are expecting all social housing to be fully compliant with the new regulations immediately they come into force on 1st October 2022.
